What are Uterine Fibroids
Above is an image of a Normal Uterus and a Uterus with Fibroids. Uterine Fibroids also known as Leiomyomas are non-cancerous tumors that are made up of muscle fibers. Sizes can range from pea to melon size. Fibroids can be found in the uterus in various places
- Intramural fibroids develop in the muscular uterine wall
- Submucosal develops just under the lining of the uterus and protrudes into the uterine cavity
- Subserosal fibroids grow under the surface of the outer uterine wall and extend outside of the uterus
Fibroid Symptoms
Uterine Fibroids can be present and not cause pain or discomfort. Others may experience common symptoms such as,
- Heavy or prolonged periods lasting 10 or more days
- Difficulty emptying the bladder, frequent urination, constipation
- Lower back or leg pain, bleeding between cycles,
- A protruding abdomen, pelvic pain, or pressure
- Painful Intercourse(Dyspareunia)
Testing for Uterine Fibroids
Uterine Fibroids can be diagnosed with a pelvic exam and or Transgavinal Ultrasound. This can be obtained by your obgyn or family doctor. Most women experience minimal pain with the transvaginal ultrasound but may complain of pressure on the bladder.
